The Art of Motor Trimming: Inside Upholster My Ride

By Cass Wood
Hello everyone, my name is Cass Wood, and I am the founder of Upholster My Ride.
Where do I start? Let me see…let’s start with why I became an upholsterer.
Well, it’s kind of a long-winded story, but who doesn’t like a back story, right? I have always sewn. Mum taught me to sew when I was about 10 years of age. I used to make a lot of my children’s clothes and things like curtains, pillow cases etc but it wasn’t until I was about 39 that I decided to ask one of my dads mates if he would teach me his trade of Motor Trimming (old school car interior upholstery) Mr Jeff Sleep better known as (Sleepy) agreed and taught me his trade.
What a great time I had learning alongside Jeff. I am so grateful to have such a wonderful mentor. He is still teaching me; every time I see him, I learn something new. If I ever manage to guide someone even half as well as he has guided me, I’d see that as a true milestone in my life.
In 2017, I started sharing one bay of our three-bay shed. I soon outgrew that space and built my own 2-bay shed! Now I’m in a three-bay shed and am still pushed for space!! What’s that saying, there is never enough shed space, it's so true.
So, what services do I offer?
I offer full interior work, seat repairs, and recoveries from the frame up, if necessary. I remake and fit old headlinings, nothing new or with an airbag! I also do motorbike seats, jet ski seats, the odd dining room chair and caravan cushions. I am already nearly booked out for 12 months this year, which is crazy!
What’s my favourite upholstery work?
It would have to be Chevy pickups; owning one myself shows how much I love them and working on them. Speaking of love, my partner Neil also works on cars, fixing their exteriors. It’s great when we get a full build together.
We have also built a new upcoming car club in our area called Inside the Garage Car Club, which is going great, so well, in fact, we are bringing a major car event to our area this year called Garagefest!
Check out our website www.garagefest.com.au or on socials.
Why did we start a car club? There are a couple of reasons. The number one reason was to get a more social life, as we found we were all doing was working! So, we made a car club, and now we have a social life with like-minded people, and it's great!
Why are we doing Garagefest? To bring a major car festival to our area, yes, it’s more than just a car show.
Thanks for reading.
Come and say hi at Garagefest in June; I will be at this unmissable event.
